William Lloyd Garrison was a very strict man and was convinced in his thoughts about slavery. After the society split in 1839, Garrison was the main leader in the Society and the members of the AASS looked up to him. Garrison made up his own rules that the members had to follow. A major rule was that the members could not associate with anyone outside the Society. The Society had a goal and that was to give colored people rights and freedom. When Garrison gave his first Speech about Anti-Slavery in Boston July 4th, 1829 he made his points clear about what he wanted the government to do about slavery. In his speech he said, "That the slaves of this country, whether we consider their moral, intellectual, or social condition, are pre-eminently entitled to the prayers and sympathies and charities of the American people." He wants slaves to have jobs no matter how intelligent they are. His speech inspired many other people not in the AASS to like their ideas because of how good Garrison's speech was.
